What is the NZAC Tūpiki Trust?

The NZAC Tūpiki Trust was established in 2021, after some years of deliberation, with the aim of supporting generous donors by acting as kaitiaki for their bequests and donations. From that safely managed pool of funds, the Trust will make grants for carefully reviewed projects and programmes which met the Trust’s objectives.

Is the NZAC Tūpiki Trust a registered charity?

Yes, the Trust CC59794 became a registered charity in January 2022.

What does Tūpiki mean?

Te Aka Māori Dictionary defines ‘tūpiki’ as ….  ‘to climb, scale, ascend’. And … ‘to bind securely’.

What is the relationship between the Trust and NZAC?

They are separate organisations which both work to foster and support New Zealand climbing, and to protect our mountains. Trust Board members are currently all members of NZAC but there is the ability to have non-NZAC board members. Administration support for the Trust is provided by NZAC staff under a service agreement.

Where does the Trust obtain its funding?

Funds for the Trust come from generous donations and bequests from those passionate about climbing in Aotearoa and from income received on accumulated funds that have been invested following professional financial advice.

Will my donation or bequest be invested wisely and managed safely?

The trustees of Tūpiki Trust recognise the need for professional support in managing funds entrusted to the trust. We will engage an experienced fund management firm for that role to ensure prudent investment, accurate accounting, timely reporting on funds held.

Does the Trust make grants to organisations other than NZAC?

Yes the Trust can make grants to a range of organisations including NZAC and to individuals. NZAC and other organisations and individuals are invited to apply for grants from the Trust using the application form here.

How does the Trust decide who gets the money and on the size of the grants it makes?

The Trustees assess each application against criteria listed on the Trust website and consider the amount of Trust funds available each year to make grants.

Are there any limitations on what grants are eligible for support?

To be eligible for consideration of a grant a project has to meet the charitable purposes of the Trust. These charitable purposes are outlined in the Trust deed and relate to the advancement of education, the promotion of health, the protection of the environment, or any other matter beneficial to the community.
